Image by Rob Battersby Join Birmingham School of Art on Wednesday 21 May, 5pm–6pm, for an evening of discussion on social practice with Becky Shaw, Liz Wewiora and Regan McDonald as they question where we place the value and success of socially engaged work.
Becky, Liz and Regan will give a 10 minute introduction of their work, followed by a panel discussion led by Stuart Whipps.
More about the panel:
Becky Shaw is an artist, researcher and Professor in Fine Art Practice at Birmingham City University. She makes live, collaborative artworks that explore the tension between individuals, environment and social structures. Works often happen in institutions of ‘public good’ including healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Artworks have been made with organisations including City of Calgary Water Services, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects, and within the Justheat research project, looking at communities’ experiences of home heating change.
Liz Wewiora is an artist, curator-producer and educator. She is currently the Head of Social Practice at Open Eye Gallery (Liverpool) and the Programme leader for MA Art and Design at the University of Salford. Across her practice, she is interested in how creating collective creative experiences can promote positive social change and become places for better understanding ourselves, each other and our planet.
Regan McDonald is a researcher and producer (Public Health Research Officer) leading on Ikon Gallery’s Creative Health programme in collaboration with Birmingham City Council Public Health. The programme explores the dynamic intersections of art and health through a series of projects, events, and exhibitions. It aims to foster dialogue, and gather evidence, with audiences and communities around topics of health and wellbeing.
The event is open to the public and free. No booking required.
