XU ZHEN: OPTIMIZING

13 July - 7 September 2018

MANN ISLAND ATRIUM

Presented as part of This is Shanghai, in partnership with Culture Liverpool.

Centuries of ritual and tradition, separated by thousands of miles, are brought together in Optimizing, a performance piece from Xu Zhen, displayed in Mann Island Atrium.

Here, the enigmatic standing rocks of Stonehenge are shrunk to a diameter of 11m, and given a new purpose as ‘Plum Blossom Poles’ – a platform for a martial arts training system focused on balance and movement. Throughout the installation, martial arts experts will perform on top of the stones.

Martial arts performances will take place from 14th July – 7th September. Performances are scheduled between Tuesday – Friday at various times. Please note these are subject to change.

PERFORMANCE TIMES

12th & 13th July: 10-7PM, on the hour every hour.

14th & 15th July: 11-6PM, on the hour every hour.

Remainder of the installation:

Monday: No performance.

Tuesday – Thursday: 1 performance per day, 1PM.

Friday – Sunday, 2 performances per day, 1PM & 4PM.

THIS IS SHANGHAI

Optimizing is one of twelve projects exhibited as part of This is Shanghai.

This is Shanghai explores and celebrates the relationship between Liverpool and its twin city in China. It offers different perspectives on everyday life in Liverpool and Shanghai, taking a close look at the parallels in urban and cultural transformation.

Presented by Culture Liverpool in partnership with Open Eye Gallery, the works can be seen across Liverpool’s iconic Waterfront. The Cunard Building plays host to a group exhibition of contemporary Chinese art, with further artworks showing at Tate Exchange Liverpool, Mann Island (outside Open Eye Gallery), and Museum of Liverpool.

This is Shanghai is the second chapter of China Dream, a 9-month arts season celebrating Chinese contemporary art and culture, in partnership with University of Liverpool. For more, head to www.chinadreamliverpool.com/.
