OPEN ROOMS #4: INDEPENDENT (PUBLISHING W/ COLIN WILKINSON)
For Open Rooms #4, we invited Colin Wilkinson, founder of Bluecoat Press, to talk about his experiences in publishing, from cultivating a unique sense of identity and dedicated audience to overcoming the challenges faced by independent publishers. He went conversation with Sorcha Boyle, Open Eye Gallery’s Retail & Events Coordinator.
Colin founded the Liverpool based publisher Bluecoat Press in 1992, specialising in the work of British photojournalists and social documentary photographers since 2012.
Examples of Bluecoat Press titles include John Bulmer’s ‘The North’, documenting the collapse of traditional industry in the North of England and Jim Mortram’s ‘Small Town Inertia’, a series about the isolation faced by those living with a physical or mental health issue. Bluecoat Press highlights photography’s ability to forge connections and attests to the strength of community. Juvenile Jazz Bands, the third Bluecoat Press publication of work from the Tish Murtha Archive will be launched this summer.
Open Rooms is Open Eye Gallery’s online programme of free live-streamed talks and workshops, with ongoing discussions on our Discord server. It takes place in rooms all across the world — artists’ rooms, chat rooms and in your living room.
