Open Rooms #16: Agency of Women

To mark the opening of the exhibition ‘Agency of Women’ at Hardmans’ House in Liverpool, Tabitha Jussa, Catherine Troiano, Mariama Attah and Angela Samata will be in conversation as part of the Open Eye gallery ‘Open Rooms’ online events programme.
Agency of Women is a collection of black and white and hand coloured portraits inspired by Margaret Hardman, the female workforce employed by the Hardmans’ and the women who had their portraits taken at 59 Rodney Street. The exhibition features a series of portraits taken by Tabitha of women at the heart of Liverpool’s cultural scene today. She has been inspired by the style and photographic techniques used by the Hardmans’ studio to create their glamorous portraits of women.
In this discussion, Catherine Troiano, National curator of Photography for the National Trust will be discussing the importance of the Hardmans’ studio photographic archive; Mariama Attah, curator at Open Eye, will touch upon women within the cultural sector today; Angela Samata, freelance arts professional, will speak about the experience of being photographed for the ‘Agency of Women’ project and Tabitha Jussa shall reflect on her time as artist in residence and how, through portraiture, we react and present ourselves to the wider world.
