Curated by Viktoria Bavykina and Max Gorbatskyi, this exhibition highlights contemporary Ukrainian photography by reflecting the vibrancy, diversity and creativity of modern Ukrainian culture. Home brings together diverse projects from Ukrainian artists who offer distinct approaches to image creation, and ways of seeing and thinking about Ukraine.
Home: Ukrainian Photography, UK Words showcases work from 15 Ukrainian photographers who reveal Ukrainians’ current experience, and fundamental human values that underpin our idea of ‘home’: family and friends in a safe space, the beautiful landscapes, culture, and identity.
Home. Ukrainian Photography, UK Words first was shown in exhibitions across Liverpool and at Open Eye Gallery in May 2023, to coincide with Liverpool’s hosting of Eurovision on behalf of Ukraine. It was initially curated by Mariamah Attah, Viktoria Bavykina and Max Gorbatskyi, together with six invited curators representing different cultural institutions across Europe and the UK who shared their perspectives on Ukrainian photography. Now, with support from Arts Council England, the exhibition will tour across the UK, first showing at the University of Salford.
Anastasiia Manuliak, Head of Visual Art, Ukrainian Institute, said: We are delighted to continue our collaboration with Open Eye Gallery and NGO Ukrainian Photography in the framework of Home exhibition, showcasing distinguished examples of Ukrainian photography. During Russia’s war in Ukraine, art and culture have become the fulcrum of social resistance, with photography playing an exceptional role as a medium that both reflects and captures the essence of the times.
