DIGITAL WINDOW GALLERY: OPEN SOURCE 07 – MARIE SMITH
1 May - 31 May 2019
Digital Window Gallery Exhibition
Marie Smith is our Open Source #07 artist with her series ‘Blown out like a candle’, which addresses the layered relationship between mother and daughter and is informed by Simone de Beauvoir’s memoir A Very Easy Death.
Marie’s mother travelled from Jamaica with her older brother to join her parents in the UK in 1967, where she lived and had a family. After the sudden death of Marie’s mother in 2015, her final resting place was chosen by Marie as she sought to reframe the narrative of her mother’s identity and migration. The images and text illustrate the landscapes that define us, and the landscapes between us.
Open Source is part of our responsive programme, offering our on and offline resources for others to use. There is no theme and no limit to number of submissions, but we encourage projects that engage with themes explored in our exhibitions. The aim of the platform is to make lesser-known artists more visible.
