This critique surgery will focus on socially engaged practice and is delivered in partnership with the Socially Engaged Photography Network at Open Eye Gallery.

Get informal advice on your projects and career during 1-1s with specialists in photography. Redeye’s regular Critique Surgeries are a supportive and welcoming space to share your work and get feedback and inspiration to continue making work and building your business. This is also a space for you to evaluate your ethical approach within your socially engaged practice.

You will have a twenty-minute slot with your reviewer but you may stay for the whole event to network and chat to other photographers and our reviewers!

Our reviewers have wide-ranging expertise across the photography sector, and you can book a Critique Surgery session with one or more of them to discuss the aspects of your practice or business that require some guidance or support. Please read the reviewer biographies carefully and think about which reviewer’s expertise might benefit you the most.

Jaskirt Dhaliwal-Boora

Jaskirt Dhaliwal-Boora (b.1985, Birmingham) is an award-winning multi-disciplinary artist whose work focuses on a socially engaged practice, working with local communities. She is interested in celebrating untold stories while exploring visual representations of gender, ethnicity and place.

Suzanne St Clare

Suzanne St Clare is a photographic artist and educator, a Director of GLOW Creative Learning and runs a commercial photography business.

Her practice centres on the exploration of memories and their staged, cinematic recreation and urban photography seeking beauty in the impermanent, imperfect and incomplete.

She has worked in collaboration with Open Eye Gallery, Tate Liverpool, Historic England, Wales NHS and Wirral Borough Council to develop, document and run socially engaged projects with communities and groups.

Her research explores the therapeutic benefits of the visual arts on the mental health of young people and the importance, relevance and impact of effective evaluation.

Anthony Luvera (online only)

Anthony Luvera is an Australian artist, writer and educator based in London. His photographic work has been exhibited widely in galleries, public spaces and festivals, including Tate Liverpool, The Gallery at Foyles, the British Museum, London Underground’s Art on the Underground, National Portrait Gallery London, Belfast Exposed Photography, Australian Centre for Photography, PhotoIreland, Malmö Fotobiennal, Goa International Photography Festival, and Les Rencontres D’Arles Photographie. His writing has appeared in a range of publications including Photography and Culture, Visual Studies, Photoworks, Source, and Photographies.

Who is it for?

The Critique Surgeries are designed to be informal sessions for photographers who are looking for feedback and advice on their socially engaged practice. Maybe you are struggling for inspiration, have hit a dead end with your latest project or you simply want advice on where, or who, to show your work to. This is also a space for you to evaluate your ethical approach within your socially engaged practice.

These sessions are designed to be friendly and supportive, and can be used to prepare your portfolio for an upcoming review or competition. Photographers at all levels and at all career stages are welcome.

When?

We have 20 minute slots with all of the reviewers available between 11am – 1pm on Monday the 6th November 2023.

When you are booking a slot, it will be a 20 minute session between 11am and 1pm. The Redeye team will organise the timetable of the reviews and send this via email to all attendees at least one week before the event.

At the point of booking, you may request a preference for your slot within the 11am – 1pm event, and we will do our best to accommodate that but we unfortunately cannot guarantee it.

We recommend you arrive15 minutes before your designated slot to get you set up but you may stay for the whole event to network and chat to other photographers and our reviewers!

Where?

This is a hybrid event, please let us know when you are booking whether you will be attending in person or online via zoom. Please note Anthony will exclusively be reviewing online.

Tickets

You can book one or more sessions (each with a different reviewer). For Redeye members, the first session is £10. Subsequent sessions are £30 each. For non-members, each session is £30. You can join Redeye as a member from £4 per month or £2.50 a month for concessions.

Space and slots are very limited so if you are unable to attend your appointment please email events@redeye.org.uk as soon as possible.

Please send through anything you would like to send to your reviewer ahead of your session, for example: your website, your instagram page, a PDF of your work, etc to events@redeye.org.uk.

Any suggestions?

The Critique Surgeries are a regular feature of Redeye’s events programme, with surgeries every few months. Hosting them online gives us the opportunity to reach reviewers who are located based outside the region or even internationally. If you have any suggestions for reviewers please send them to events@redeye.org.uk.

A note about the pricing

These Critique Surgeries are expensive for Redeye to produce; we pay the reviewers for their work. The £30 fee is somewhat below cost price so please make the most of your time and give us as much warning as you can if you are not able to attend. Although we don’t normally offer refunds for cancellations less than 14 days before an event, if you have to cancel and we are able to fill your cancelled slot we can then refund you.
