Martin Parr: A great photographer and a great champion of photography

The team at Open Eye Gallery are immensely saddened by Martin Parr’s passing.

Martin Parr reshaped the photographic landscape in the UK and beyond. He loved the medium, continually pushed its boundaries and influenced generations of photographers. Perhaps his best-known project, The Last Resort, shot in New Brighton, and exhibited at Open Eye Gallery in 1986, signalled a significant change in what documentary photography might be. A great photographer and a great champion of photography, his passion and curiosity never faltered.

Martin Parr Foundation became a hub for both emerging and established practitioners, who now gather there, en masse, for Bristol Photo Festival and BOP. We are proud to have collaborated with him on what became the last exhibition he opened there in October 2025 – Open Eye Gallery’s Proximity by Stephen McCoy.

Many have celebrated his work, and we will never lose its impact on us.
