Head of Social Practice, Liz Wewiora

Liz Wewiora is a photographic artist, curator-producer and educator (and Mum!). Liz shares the role of Head of Social Practice for Open Eye Gallery with Sophie Mahon. As part of Liz’s role, she is the coordinator of the Socially Engaged Photography Network. She is also the programme leader for MA Art and Design pathways courses at the University of Salford which includes our joint MA in socially engaged photography.

As a curator-producer she has worked with organisations including FACT (Liverpool), Glasgow Sculpture Studios, ESEA contemporary; and as a freelancer has led on national touring projects such as Northern Art Carbooty, Tall Tales and SIXTEEN. As an artist she has undertaken commissions with CCA Glasgow, AA2A residencies, Tate Exchange, Manchester Histories and Museum of Liverpool – but also many non-cultural partner commissions with organisations like Centre Point, NHS England, Allotments society UK & Age UK.

She is also undertaking a practice based PhD between University of Salford and Open Eye Gallery, exploring the impact of embedding more socially engaged ways to practice across the disciplines of artist-curator-educator in cultural and higher education settings.
