We are proud to be shortlisted for The Liverpool City Region Culture & Creativity Awards-2025! The Awards recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution that culture and creativity make to the city region.
Art Organisation of the Year award celebrates an organisation whose work has stood out and contributed to the cultural and creative reputation of the LCR. Open Eye Gallery is proud to champion photography as a tremendously powerful way of bringing different voices into conversation together. We work with local residents, communities and international partners to support representation, empathy, equality and inclusivity.
Sarah Fisher, Open Eye Gallery’s director, said: 2024 was a great year for engaging communities from across LCR in creativity, with almost 5,000 working with a neighbourhood photographer in residence, or taking part in a workshop or event. Visitors to our exhibitions in the gallery, LCR public realm and community venues reached almost 350,000. A number of exhibitions, workshops and events focused on a core theme for us, community relationship to nature. Nationally and internationally the gallery led on socially engaged practice and we’re particularly proud of work on the Ukrainian Pavilion at Venice Biennale, attracting over 500,000 and continuing LCR’s proud support for Ukraine.
Environmental Awards celebrates the impact culture and creativity has on the green agenda, including environmental sustainability and contribution to net zero targets. In 2024 Open Eye Gallery held its biennial LOOK programme: LOOK Climate Lab and LOOK Photo Biennial. The programme explores how photography can be a relevant and powerful medium for talking about climate change, bringing together researchers and artists to test their ideas and encouraging our audiences to discuss systematic changes needed for dealing with the climate crisis.
This year LOOK projects explored the environmental footprint of wars, the co-existance with non-human living species, and regenerative farming and food security.
Open Eye Gallery is grateful to all our LOOK partners: Gaia Foundation, Energy House 2.0 Salford, Royal Horticultural Society, The Tree Council, Impressions Gallery, Peloton Liverpool Coop, Wigan Council, The Mersey Forest, Liverpool ONE and many others who bring people and ideas together, explore the complexities of human-nature relationships and make positive changes to live more sustainable and connected lives.
