“You love photography. You wrote it on your Instagram profile description too. But consider this: photography might not love you back. Photography might not even like you. Now that’s a good premise for an awkward relationship or a bad rom-com movie.”

Katrina Sluis, in conversation with Jacob Bolton, discusses the circulation, weaponisation and proliferation of images online.
Images are networked and slippery: they move around online, changing hands and changing meaning. As they do, new power dynamics form, and images take on a new capacity to confuse, complicate and incriminate. And yet, many of us remain drawn to it as an emancipatory medium, which – as the story goes – makes the world a better place.
At the present moment, does the notion of photography as something that clarifies and amplifies need to be reassessed, or abandoned altogether? Digital images are more than pictures — they are weapons, and the devil often lies in the metadata. Photography wants to steal your face, expose your location, arrest you. Photography wants to spread lies, create chaos, track movements. Will you let it?
