OPEN SOURCE

What is Open Source?

Open Source is a rolling submission-based open call, giving developing and early-career artists the opportunity to showcase their work digitally on the gallery’s exterior screen. A new photographer will show for the duration of a month, every month. We’re looking for photographic projects that connect to our exhibitions, offering new ways of looking at the issues we confront in the gallery. Open Source is part of our responsive programme, offering our on and offline resources for others to use. There is no theme and no limit to number of submissions, but we encourage projects that engage with themes explored in our exhibitions. The aim of the platform is to make lesser-known artists more visible.

Current Open Source#28 Artist

Sam Patton: Room to Breathe

Why we do it and what Open Source offers you?

The digital window serves as a vibrant link between photography and the community, providing an engaging opportunity for onlookers to connect with captivating images. We understand the importance of having a platform to exhibit and promote photography, so we created Open Source to provide photographers with a dedicated space to showcase their work. Through our platform, we strive to amplify the visibility of emerging and lesser-known artists, ensuring their talent reaches a wider audience.

Online presence

In addition to the digital show, each exhibited photographer is added to an online roster, linking to their website and/or print sales page. The updating list will serve as a catalogue of contemporary photographic work addressing a myriad of themes and concepts directly linked to Open Eye Gallery’s exhibition programme. Artists will also have the opportunity, should they wish, to take over Open Eye Gallery’s Instagram, or present events in the gallery space. The photographer retains all copyright to their imagery and captions. Credited images will only be used online to further promote the Open Source platform and the photographer, and only by written consent.

Submission guidelines

We invite submissions without any specific theme or submission limit. However, we highly encourage projects that engage with the issues explored in our exhibitions such as sustainability, social mobility and community, as well as work that actively involves and connects with the local Liverpool region.

Each image should be .jpg files no larger than 2mb without watermarks and titled with the name of photographer in the order they are to be viewed (for example, FirstnameLastname01.jpg). Please include the following as a PDF document, with images attached separately — not in a zipped folder.

Series title, name of photographer/artist, brief bio (maximum 100 words), series statement (maximum 100 words), contact details, website url. Those with successful submissions will be contacted for high-resolution files. Photographers will retain all copyright of their images. Submissions: opensource@openeye.org.uk
