Saturday Girl and Saturday Town by Casey Orr, £10 & £28

Get ready to meet the Saturday Girl and its evolved form, Saturday Town – an award-winning collection of portraits featuring young people across the UK! Since 2013, photographer Casey Orr has been on a mission, traveling to towns and cities all over the country with her pop-up portrait studio, capturing the vibrant spirit of youth culture every Saturday afternoon.

Throughout the years, Saturday Girl has transformed into Saturday Town, where Casey Orr has forever captured the diversity across UK fashion scenes, from the playful curlers of Liverpool to the bold statements made by fashionable folks in various towns across the country. This collection represents the UK in the most raw and captivating way, creating a pathway between generations. Here, a retired punk from Leeds can see himself in a young person whose photo was taken just a year ago, somewhere else – in a different Saturday Town.

Over 11 years, Orr has ventured to 20 different cities and towns, capturing over 800 unique styles. Welcome the Saturday Town and the Saturday Girl to your collection!

Building upon the playful spirit and celebration of individuality that Casey brought to our bookshop, here are a few books you might enjoy alongside Casey’s work.

The Kings of England by Graeme Oxby, £25

Here they are, the kings of rock-and-roll! This photography book will take you straight to the world of Elvis, where his fans keep the spirit of rock-and-roll alive. Today, his spirit lives on through countless impersonators all over the UK. His influence spans across generations, and in the ever-evolving landscape of music, we can find a different version of Elvis all across the UK.

Photographer and author of this book, Graeme Oxby, embarked on a journey to capture the adoration for the performer. What began as a simple photographic project evolved into a more personal take on the King’s legacy – each image being a window into the hearts of devoted fans and their deep connection with the singer. For five years, with his camera, Oxby joined the world of color and drama, painting a vivid portrait of Elvis’s legacy.

The Theatre of the Face Portrait Photography by Max Kozloff, £39.95

Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of portrait photography! Offering a fresh lens on the medium’s history, the book delves into the intricate dynamics between the photographer and the subject, unraveling the captivating stories that lie within the frames.

Illustrated with over 300 captivating photographs in black-and-white and color, the texts feature both early pioneers and modern photographers. It’s not just a history lesson – it’s an exploration of works across generations. Whether you’re a well-versed critic, a photography student, or simply a visual arts lover, this book is a must-have addition to your collection.

GilesSølveKatie by Giles Deacon, Katie Grand and Sølve Sundsbø, £50

Step into the world of fashion with designer Giles Deacon, photographer Sølve Sundsbø, and stylist Katie Grand as they unveil 15 years of their collaborations in this book. Filled with photography work accompanied by stories detailing the behind-the-scenes of their projects, the book offers a glimpse into the production processes and artistic visions behind their collaborations.

The creatives featured in this book represent different parts of the fashion industry, yet they have collectively produced impactful works, all of which are captured by Sølve. But their work not only inspires! Looking through the photography-filled pages, you might be able to start seeing fashion in a different light.

Being Inbetween by Carolyn Mendelsohn, £28

Being Inbetween is a vibrant collection of over 90 photographic portraits capturing the essence of girls aged between ten and twelve as they navigate the exciting yet challenging transition from childhood to adolescence.

Photographer Carolyn Mendelsohn, driven by her own experiences, collaborated with inspiring young individuals, offering them a platform to express themselves authentically. In a world often defined by marketing and social media expectations, these girls reclaim their identities through Mendelsohn’s lens, sharing their dreams, fears, and aspirations.

And now meet Abigail, age 10, who dreams of becoming an architect and raising wolves in Romania once she has enough money! Each girl is not just the subject but the creator of her own narrative in this portrait photography book, the artist of her own image in a world full of conflicting narratives.

My.Self by Michelle Sank, £15

Get ready to dive into Michelle’s world of photographs, a project which represents young people in the Black Country aged between 13 and 19 as they boldly express their identities through fashion, makeup, hairstyles, and gender.

Each participant had the opportunity to co-create their own portrait – they chose their own clothing, makeup, and personal style before being photographed in their chosen setting. From diverse social backgrounds, these individuals invite us into their bedrooms, where every object and decoration becomes a metaphor for their individuality and cultural identity.

Michelle’s project looks into what it means to be a young person in today’s society, especially within the vibrant culture of the Black Country.
