TreeStory: The Story of Wigan Through its Trees is an exciting community project that invites everyone in Wigan to discover and celebrate the incredible trees that shape our borough’s landscape and heritage. From the remarkable wetlands of the Flashes of Wigan and Leigh National Nature Reserve – where nature has beautifully reclaimed former coal mining sites – to the cherished trees in our parks, streets, and green spaces, this project will bring together local schools, community groups, and residents to share their personal TreeStories through photography, creative workshops, and outdoor adventures.

Whether you’re interested in learning about the wildlife that calls our trees home, exploring the fascinating history of how our green spaces have transformed over the past 50 years, or simply want to connect with nature on your doorstep, TreeStory offers free activities for all ages and abilities. Join us as we create an interactive online map telling Wigan’s unique story through its trees, plant new trees for future generations, and build a lasting legacy that celebrates both our natural heritage and the communities that care for it.

Both TreeStory Liverpool and TreeStory Wigan have been made possible thanks to generous funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
