SIXTEEN YEARS OLD — PAST AND PRESENT: THE ATKINSON

21 August - 24 August 2019

RSVP

ALL WELCOME

For 3 days Emily Bryant will be in residence in The Atkinson, inviting the public to share their memories about what it means to be sixteen. The event invites anyone around the age of sixteen to partake in a workshop session with a relative or peer of an older generation. All participants are asked to bring along a photograph or object containing a memory of being sixteen, which will aid conversation between the two generations.

The project will create photographic and audio work that explores the similarities and differences that sixteen years olds today experience compared to previous generations. Work produced in these workshops will be exhibited later in the year in Open Eye Gallery’s Digital Window Gallery.

The sessions will run at The Atkinson on the 21st, 23rd and 24th of August 2019 between 10:30am – 4pm. For any further information please contact emily@openeye.org.uk

This project is in partnership with the University of Salford and is in response to Craig Easton’s project SIXTEEN, which asks ‘what’s it like to be sixteen years old now’? Craig Easton invited leading photographers to join him and collaborate with more than one hundred and seventy young people across the UK to explore the hopes, dreams, ambitions and fears of sixteen year olds from different walks of life. In keeping with their 2019 policy of showcasing the work of female photographers, Open Eye Gallery has selected work by four of the female photographers in the group: Linda Brownlee, Lottie Davis, Jillian Edelstein and Kate Peters. Using photography, writing, and social media these portraits, and the wider SIXTEEN portfolio, give prominence to voices rarely heard.
