Picturing Eccles @ Eccles shopping Centre windows and Eccles Library
6 September - 19 October 2024
Cross-site exhibition in Eccles shopping Centre windows and Eccles Library
Picturing Eccles celebrates the life and culture of this local area through photography. For the past six months, photographer-in-residence Paula Keenan has been working with residents to capture the diversity of people and places that make up the community.
A host of local community groups and the general public have explored the town through photo walks, creative workshops, collecting archived and donated images. Over plenty of cups of tea Paula has spent time talking with people about what they love and hope for the future of Eccles. The exhibition brings together images, both old and new, which celebrate the residents, diverse and creative community groups and initiatives, and key buildings and landmarks of the area.
Eccles today is on an exciting journey of major change to reinvent itself as a thriving town centre. Salford City Council is working closely with local organisations, community groups and businesses to create a town that reaches its potential and becomes the best place it can be.
This project was formed between Salford City Council and Open Eye Gallery as a way to strengthen this further and celebrate local culture at this exciting time for Eccles.
The following groups and people have supported and contributed to the Picturing Eccles project:
Anthony Mills who allowed Paula Keenan to use his Facebook page Eccles Life to inform local people and photographers about the project at the very beginning, Adam Keigher, Beata Sawa, Dag Pagan, David Ojo-Ade, Grace Colley, Ian S Hastie (archive images), Karen Muldown, Karl Hesford, Mark Charnley, Martin Sharp, Michael Foster, Nathan Ashmall, Pam Pickard, Richard Yates, Russel Newsham, Sandra Savage Fisher, Simon Carter, Steven Healey, Tyran Choy and Wes Dore.
Paula would also like to thank the following groups who gave their time and support to the project by submitting photographs or allowing local photographers to take photographs of their activities:
Tindall Street Allotments, Eccles Parish Church St Mary’s Bell Ringers, Incredible Edible Salford, Eccles Community Chess Club, Eccles Parish Church St Mary’s Thursday Welcome Group, The Castle LGBTQ+ Youth Group, Barton Athletic Club, Barton Amateur Boxing Club, Eccles Team Ministry and Yemeni Community Association.
