OPEN ROOMS #12: INDEPENDENTS BIENNIAL
THURS 6 MAY 2021
Watch our online discussion with Independents Biennial artists Sam Venables, Feiyi Wen and Montse Mosquera in conversation with Patrick Kirk-Smith, Festival Director at Independents Biennial and Sorcha Boyle, Responsive Programme Coordinator at Open Eye Gallery.
Independents Biennial exists to celebrate the region’s creative life and cast a fresh perspective on how people in Merseyside see, make and use art.
Between 18 March – 06 June, Sam Venables, Feiyi Wen and Montse Mosquera will exhibit their work digitally on the Open Eye Gallery’s exterior screen and take over the gallery’s Instagram account.
This talk explores the significance of photography to each artist’s individual practice and how this has developed in the context of this year’s festival, which sits in an intersection between digital and analogue programming; between physical and online connectedness; between text and image.
Sam Venables
More often than not a sculptor, Sam Venables makes artwork about fandom, advertising and ideas around what makes something feel ‘local’ to a place. The photographs she takes informs her installations.
The things we choose to discard and the items we cherish form a personal narrative. Sam Venables’ work Bonanza considers the street as a space of refuse and discovery; the photographs of streets become part of a wider story about what and why we collect the things we do and how they come together to build a story around particular cities.
