Hope and Fear: Climate Crisis
TUESDAY 25 JANUARY / 11AM–1PM / BOOK HERE
Dr Evan Killick (Anthropology and International Development) and Dr Doug Haynes (American Studies/Liberal Arts) will introduce a brief history of global development and how we arrived at the current global climate crisis.
Evan will provide a video lecture on the particular ideas of ‘progress’ on which global development has been based, its consequences and critiques.
After a discussion of the power of narratives we will then turn to possible ways out of the crisis and the different ideologies and visions of the future that underpin them.
There is no set reading for this week but please watch Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 20 min TED Talk on The Danger of a Single Story.
The danger of a single story | Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Come to the seminar ready to discuss the following questions:
• What is the story of development?
• What have the impacts of its story been?
• How might the story be changed?
