Open Eye Gallery is delighted to be delivering its 5th Crossing Sectors – a professional development training programme exploring the role of socially engaged photography with a variety of cross-sector and community partners. This year the programme opens up places for both lens-based artists and creative producers/curators with an active interest in socially engaged practice.
Deadline for submissions of interest: 10am, Monday 3 March 2025
Programme runs: Monday 28 April – Monday 14 July 2025
Programme and guest speakers
The programme will support practitioners to explore the multiple ways culture can be co-authored with others and questions where contemporary art and photography practice can exist in society today.
We have invited a host of specialist facilitators from across the cultural, health, youth, educational, environmental and community settings to share their knowledge and expertise, as well as hands-on training around equality, diversity and inclusion and safeguarding.
Each session will offer practical, methodological and ethical advice and this year we are excited to invite some of our Year 4 Crossing Sector programme attendees, alongside Open Eye Gallery staff back to act as one-one mentors with the new cohort of participants.
Guest speakers include:
Our 2025 programme will also be part of an impact case study for a practice based PhD with Liz Wewiora and the University of Salford. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute your views on the role of socially engaged arts practice as part of this research once the programme is complete.

The programme will start on Monday 28 April 2025 and will finish Monday 14 July 2025 (to accommodate a number of Bank holiday Monday breaks).
