Open Eye Gallery’s Head of Exhibitions Mariama Attah will be moving to an amazing new job with Autograph, a gallery with a mission to champion the work of artists who use photography and film to highlight questions of race, representation, human rights and social justice. We are excited for Mariama, who is steeped in the creative and critical power of visual representation as a curator, and we are grateful for her time with us.

Mariama is a photography curator, editor and writer with a particular interest in the power of photography to represent visual culture. Working with the Open Eye Gallery team and community partners, she led the gallery’s programme towards embracing co-authorship.  During her time at Open Eye Gallery Mariama curated several successful exhibitions including the LOOK Photo Biennial 2022, taught the Contemporary Photographic Practices course, co-wrote the Open Eye Photography BA programme, joined Castlefield Gallery’s Board of Directors and Trustees, and became a judge for the 2023 Sony World Photography Awards.

It was a privilege to work with Mariama, and we can’t wait to see her new projects. Meanwhile, you can hear her at Green Agendas symposium discussing sustainable and environmental practice within art and Future Now symposium discussing the future of curation.

The position of Curator is now open: apply here. The deadline is midnight on Tuesday 4th April, with interviews held on Monday 17th April.
