Open Eye Gallery seeking Photographer-In-Residence in Kitale, Kenya
Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool UK and Kitale Museum, Kenya are commissioning an artist-in-residence in Kitale to explore the history of the local landscape and the impact of climate change through its trees.
Kitale Museum is home to an indigeneous forest which includes a small selection of vegetation that previously covered Kitale. The forest is an important part of the community and we are commissioning an artist to work with Kitale communities to create a project that explores the role of trees, and their cultural significance for different communities.
The forest is a classroom to many school children in the area and also features in oral traditions and stories passed down by elders. We are interested in working with a photographer who can bring together these young people and their elders through workshops, activities, photo walks, stories, interviews and image making to share the importance of landscapes and our reliance on them in a changing climate.
The selected photographer will have an interest in the local area and preferably a connection or understanding of Kitale. They will be able to work in a flexible, engaged way to make sure that communities and audiences feel like a meaningful part of the project, from production to and completion.
There will be a chance to showcase the work in progress at the end of June at Kitale Museum with the possibility to present the finished project during LOOK Photo Biennial in 2022 with Open Eye Gallery which will take the theme of climate change and environmental issues.
The photographer will be provided with access to equipment, including a camera and lenses, hard drives and projectors as well as accommodation, and a per diem.
