Tell It Like It Is: Ian Clegg and Laura Robertson in Conversation
As part of L— A City Through Its People, Open Eye Gallery presents a conversation with photographer Ian Clegg and writer Laura Robertson, the duo behind Tell It Like It Is.
Tell It Like It Is is a collaborative project combining photography and creative writing. The image-text relationship ruminates on the shifting nature of the city, consisting of photographs that remained as negatives for forty years, introducing a collaborative perspective on the city from two Liverpool residents and creative practitioners.
In this conversation, Clegg and Robertson discuss the history of the images, how they spent several decades in a box under Clegg’s bed, and how the pair’s journey together as creative practitioners led to the project Tell It Like It Is. The pair ask: can old photographs become a catalyst for new images and new stories? Can we ever escape old stereotypes and established narratives? What happens when we write about these images now?
