Hope and Fear: Indigenous Perspectives
TUESDAY 1 FEBRUARY / 11AM–1PM / BOOK HERE
Dr Alice Eldridge (Music), Paccha Turner Chuji (Activist) & Dr Evan Killick (Anthropology and International Development) will introduce the Latin American concept of Buen Vivir and explore it from historical, political and experiential perspectives. We will consider how this offers an alternative to the development narratives of week one, how it changes what we value, our relationships with ‘nature’ and the relevance
Following a theoretical introduction to the broad concepts of Buen Vivir, we will learn more about Sumak Kawsay, central to Amazonian Kichwa culture from guest Paccha Turner Chuji and consider its relevance in facing contemporary social, cultural, environmental and economic crises. Finally we will explore a manifestation of Buen Vivir in a recent participatory action research project, Sacha Taki (Songs of the Forest).
Required Prep :
Gudynas, Eduardo. 2011. Buen Vivir: today’s tomorrow. Development 54(4): 441–447.
This article is a short accessible piece on the evolution of different form of Buen Vivir across Latin America. It explores Buen Vivir concepts as alternatives to modernity and mainstream western development.
